📊 Van Comparison Summary

📋 Van Categories & Comparison Metrics

Van Size Guide:

  • Small Vans (up to 3.5t GVW): City delivery, courier work. Payload 370-800kg. Range 124-186 miles.
  • Medium Vans (3.5t GVW): Multi-drop delivery, trades. Payload 650-1,100kg. Range 186-256 miles.
  • Large Vans (3.5-7.5t GVW): Long-distance, heavy goods. Payload 1,045-3,520kg. Range 173-285 miles.

Understanding the Metrics:

  • Cost per Mile: Your actual operating cost per mile driven (£0.XX). Lower is better.
  • Cost per kg/mile: Operating cost divided by payload capacity. Shows efficiency for different van sizes. A large van may cost more per mile but less per kg/mile if you need the capacity.
  • Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): Purchase price + all running costs - residual value over the operating period.

Calculation Assumptions:

  • Government grants: £2,500 (small/medium), £9,000 (large vans) - OZEV 2025
  • Electricity costs: £0.35/kWh (small/medium), £0.32/kWh (large) - commercial rates
  • Maintenance: 40-50% lower than diesel equivalents
  • Insurance: 15-20% higher than diesel (improving as market matures)
  • Residual value: 35% after 5 years (conservative estimate)
  • Prices include manufacturer RRP as of September 2025
